Phonics

READING/PHONICS

As we close out the school year and look forward to next year in Kindergarten, please continue to review over the summer. This will help your child to be more confident and successful in Kindergarten. The basics would include the following:

*Upper and Lower case letters

*Letter Sounds

*Follow 3 step directions. Get your yellow socks, put them on and then get your shoes. something like that.

*Look at a picture and be able to point out details in the picture. Be able to tell you a made up story about the picture.

*Recognize numbers 1-12. Be able to give you a certain quantity of something--hand me 3 blocks, 8 blocks. Then answer questions like, if you give me 5 blocks, how many do you have left?

*Write first name using a capital at the beginning and the rest in lower case.

*Know their birthday and how old they are.

*Catch and throw a ball, skip, gallop, hop on one foot

*Know the 4 basic shapes and be able to draw them

*Cut on a straight and curved line

Then continue to practice reading as well as being read to. The public library has reading programs with prizes. Then if you finish it, they submit your name to the school they will be attending in the fall for recognition. Our school usual calls them down to an ice cream party or something like that.

I am sending home their math book. THEY DO NOT NEED TO FINISH IT.  But if you want, work through some of the pages with them. When it gets to hard, that is ok, just stop doing it. They really only need to know their numbers to 12. Everything over that will be extra. They will need to be able to follow directions in Math. If you look at the math pages, they will need to follow directions like in it. Please don't expect your child to do these pages independently. Help them, talk it through with them. :)

They have learned so much this year. I am very proud of each one of them. Keep up the good work!
